Enabling Access to Cancer Expertise for Underprivileged Patients
Who We Are

Umbrella Foundation was established in February 2019 as a Charitable Trust to provide expert opinions for free to underprivileged cancer patients. The foundation plays a key role in targeting and reaching cancer patients through local partners such as cancer care NGOs, media, and cancer hospitals that are part of the National Cancer Grid or Public Health System.
Our Vision
Enabling Access to Cancer Expertise for Underprivileged Patients
Our Mission

-
To provide online expert opinions to cancer patients to guide their treatment based on expertise from leading expert centers.
-
Engage in targeted outreach to connect with cancer patients and enable their care with expertise.
-
Provide treatment opinions for free to underprivileged cancer patients.
-
Close the existing cancer care gap, where access to quality cancer care and treatment is not uniformly distributed. This gap is particularly noticeable in peripheral areas where healthcare facilities are limited.

To help achieve the above objectives, Umbrella Foundation works with Navya Care - a cancer informatics and patient services organization that leverages technology to provide personalized, evidence-based cancer treatment plans.
Navya Care has collaborated with Tata Memorial Centre - one of the world’s largest tertiary cancer centres for over 14 years. TMC convenes the National Cancer Grid, a consortium of 360 cancer hospitals in India.

Closing the Cancer Care Gap

Despite rapid increases in the worldwide cancer burden, access to cancer care remains inequitable:

-
The WHO recommends one oncologist for a population base of 100,000; however, the ratio in India is 1:800,000.
-
India has only ~2,000 oncologists for over 3 million cancer patients, and ~300 expert oncologists experienced in evidence-based treatments at tertiary centres; mostly in metropolitan cities.
-
The number of tumour specific experts such as liver cancer surgeons or paediatric solid tumour oncologists is even lower.
-
This results in great discrepancies in access to expertise across India.
